Spinous process of thoracic vertebra

View Related Images

Description:

The thoracic spines are long, obliquely directed processes. They are thin near their superior margin and gradually thicken inferiorly. They are wider near their junction with the laminae and taper to rounded tubercles at their apex. Spines five through eight are oblique and almost approach a vertical orientation as they overlap the spine of the subjacent vertebra. Spinous processes one to four and nine to twelve have a more transverse orientation. These spinous processes are thick and long, projecting dorsally in the horizontal plane. Along with the vertebra prominens (C7), the first thoracic spine is easily palpated. The spines form extensive surfaces for the attachment of muscles and ligaments.
