Posterior intercostal arteries

Description:

The posterior intercostal arteries are segmental branches of the thoracic aorta that project laterally to course in each of the intercostal spaces. They distribute blood to the muscles of the intercostal space and the overlying skin. The lower branches also run onto the abdominal wall and distribute blood to the abdomen. They form collateral circuits with the anterior intercostal arteries in the lateral wall of the thorax.
