Description:

The heart is a hollow, muscular organ that is a dual, self-regulating, unidirectional pump that, through its pumping action, drives the blood through the circulatory vessels of the body. It is situated in the middle mediastinum lying slightly to the left side of the thorax. It has two receiving chambers, the atria, which receive venous blood from the lungs and body. It has two pumping chambers, the ventricles, which pump arterial blood to the lungs and remainder of the body.
