Description:

The spinous process of the axis is the thickest of the spines of the cervical vertebral column. It has a greater top to bottom dimension than the other spines. Its apex is notched to form a bifid dorsal tip. This strong process functions as an attachment surface for many of the extensor muscles of the vertebral column.
