Histology - Smooth muscle

This is a section of smooth muscle from the tunica media of a muscular artery. Notice the long spindle-shape cells with a central nucleus and the lack of striations. This tissue is the contractile tissue in the walls of many organs. In addition to blood vessels, it is found in the walls of the digestive organs, the respiratory organs, the urinary organs, and the reproductive organs.
