The embalmed cadaver observed here reveals the first body system - the integument. The integument, comprised of the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis, covers the body and has a variety of functions. The only layer of the integumentary system visible initially in the cadaver is the outer epithelial layer called the epidermis.

Note, as is typical of most embalmed cadavers, that the posterior surface is flat because the embalming and fixing process occurs while the cadaver lies supine on a table.
