Description:
The posterior cutaneous nerve of the thigh, or posterior femoral cutaneous nerve, is a large cutaneous branch of the sacral plexus. It arises from the ventral rami of sacral spinal nerves S1, S2, and S3. It descends to pass beneath the piriformis muscle under the cover of the gluteus maximus muscle. It enters the thigh below the gluteus and courses superficial to the biceps femoris and deep to the fascia lata. It gives off numerous branches that pierce the fascia and are distributed to the skin of the inferior gluteal region, posterior thigh, and proximal posterior leg.
