Description:
The medulla oblongata is the most inferior part of the brain stem. It arises as the continuation of the spinal cord through the foramen magnum. It is the site of numerous nuclei for the cranial nerves. It relays impulses from stretch and equilibrium to the cerebellum. It is a major autonomic reflex center relaying visceral motor control to the heart, blood vessels, respiratory and digestive tracts to control things such as respiratory rhythm, vomiting, swallowing, sneezing, and coughing.
