Description:

This opening and passage transmits the vestibulocochlear and facial nerves from the cranial cavity into the petrous temporal bone, where they travel to the inner ear and facial canal, respectively. It is about 2.5 centimeters posterolateral to the apex. This forms an obvious oval opening on the posteromedial aspect of the petrous temporal bone.
