Description:
This is a sickle-shaped fold of the peritoneum that originates from posterior side of the anterior abdominal wall between the umbilicus and the inferior aspect of the diaphragm. It then passes onto the liver where its superior portion splits to blend with the right and left coronary ligaments of the liver and its free bottom margin passes between the right and left lobes of the liver. The ligamentum teres, the obliterated remnant of the left umbilical vein, runs in the lower free edge of the falciform ligament from the umbilicus to the liver. The falciform ligament arises from the embryonic ventral mesentery.
