Description:

The primary oocyte is a stage in the development of the female gamete, the ovum. These cells arise from oogonia in the fetus and enter prophase of meiosis I during fetal life and do not complete that phase until after puberty. The primary oocyte is located in the ovary where it is surrounded by a single layer of flat follicular cells.
