Description:

The muscularis mucosae is a thin layer of smooth muscle fibers that underlie the lamina propria of the mucosa of the gastrointestinal tract. Movements of the muscularis mucosae ensure that all absorptive cells are fully exposed to the contents of the gastrointestinal tract and also help regulate lymph flow from the lymphatic capillaries in the wall of the small intestines.
