Description:
Dense irregular connective tissue is one of the most widely distributed tissues in the body. It has thick, irregular bands of collagen that are the predominant feature of the tissue. This irregular arrangement of collagen in the tissue gives it tensile strength in all directions. It forms the dermis of the skin, the fascial coverings of the body, the connective tissue envelopes surrounding and within skeletal muscles, the periosteum of bones, the fibrous membrane of joint capsules, the fibrous pericardium of the heart, the dura mater covering of the brain and spinal cord, and the capsules around many organs.
