Description:

The costal cartilages are the hyaline cartilage bars that attach the ends of the ribs to the sternum. The cartilages of ribs 1 to 7 attach to the sternum directly, the cartilages of ribs 8 to 10 attach to the costal cartilage of the rib above it, and the costal cartilages of ribs 11 and 12 are short and do not attach to the sternum or other cartilages.
