Description:
This is a strong ligamentous band (sometimes referred to as the transverse carpal ligament) that spans from the carpal bones on the lateral aspect of the ventral wrist to those on the medial aspect. It forms a strong fibro-osseous tunnel with the ventrally concave carpal bones - the carpal tunnel. This strong band holds the long digital flexors - the flexor digitorum superficialis and profundus and the flexor pollicis longus- in place on the anterior surface of the wrist. The median nerve also passes beneath the retinaculum.
