Description:

This is the large, deep notch on the posterior margin of the ischium that sits above the ischial spine and below the junction with the posterior inferior iliac spine. This notch provides passage for the piriformis muscle, the superior and inferior gluteal vessels and nerves, the sciatic and posterior femoral cutaneous nerves, the internal pudendal vessels and pudendal nerve, and the nerves to the obturator internus and quadratus femoris muscles on their course from the pelvis to the gluteal region.
