Description:

The alae, or wing-like lateral processes of the sacrum, form from the fusion of the transverse processes and sacral ribs. The wings are wide in the anteroposterior plane superiorly becoming narrower inferiorly. Their lateral surface is the hyaline cartilage covered auricular surface that forms the synovial joints with the os coxae.
